The Town
Stowe, Vermont, has a unique history that dates back to 1763, though people didn’t really start settling here until the 1790s because it was pretty remote. Early settlers were drawn to the area for its thick forests, perfect for logging, and fertile land for farming.
In the 1800s, Stowe became known as a summer escape, where people came to relax and enjoy the fresh mountain air. But the town’s real transformation happened in the 1930s with the rise of skiing. Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s tallest mountain, became a go-to spot for skiing, and in the 1940s, Stowe Mountain Resort opened, making it one of the top ski destinations in the eastern U.S.
One interesting historical fact is that Stowe’s ski patrol was the first in the country! Established in the late 1930s as skiing gained popularity, a group of dedicated local volunteers formed the patrol to ensure safety on the challenging terrain of Mount Mansfield, hiking up with basic medical supplies to assist injured skiers. Their pioneering efforts set the standard for ski patrol operations across the country. Over the years, the Stowe Ski Patrol evolved into a highly trained professional team, becoming leaders in avalanche control and emergency rescue. This rich heritage of safety and innovation continues to be a point of pride for the patrol and the resort, highlighting its commitment to maintaining Stowe’s status as a premier skiing destination.
Nowadays, Stowe is a year-round adventure spot. In winter, it’s all about skiing and snowboarding, while in the warmer months, people come for hiking, biking, and outdoor exploring. Despite its popularity, Stowe has maintained its natural beauty and small-town charm, making it a highly sought-after vacation destination for families across the world. Even while people have never visited, when they hear “Stowe,” they think “special.”
